What is a triple double in basketball?

A Triple-Double in basketball occurs when a player accumulates ten or more in three of the following five statistical categories in a single game:

  • Points: The total number of points scored.
  • Rebounds: Retrieving the ball after a missed field goal or free throw.
  • Assists: Passing the ball to a teammate in a way that leads directly to a score.
  • Steals: Taking possession of the ball from the opposing team's possession, live dribble, or pass.
  • Blocks: Deflecting an opponent's shot attempt, preventing it from scoring.

It is a notable accomplishment showing a player's all-around contribution to the game. Because steals and blocks are more difficult to achieve in high quantities, a triple-double involving them is especially rare.
